FRANZISKA STÜNKEL
COEXIST
solo show at art miami
December 5–10, 2023
For the first time at art miami 2023, the Berlin-based gallery Jarmuschek + Partner is presenting the photographic works of the German artist Franziska Stünkel in a solo exhibition from December 5-10.
“Reflections enable the perception of simultaneous life. We all live in coexistence, sometimes
without consciously noticing it. Coexistence is timeless, but also highly topical right now.“ F.S.
Since 2009, Franziska Stünkel has been traveling with her Leica Camera through Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and America in search of natural reflections on window glass, which, in their concentration, tell of the coexistence of human life. Charged with the utmost complexity, her photographs are the visualization of the similarities and contrasts that exist in our multifaceted, networked world. Special conditions and unusual challenges often determined the context of Franziska Stünkel’s travels, which she always undertakes alone. Her latest photographs in particular resonate with highly relevant global themes, such as the interaction of humans with nature, the challenges of cultural diversity and the effects of digitalisation. Without any digital post-processing, over 150 photographs of reflections have been created during the last fourteen years. The result is a multi-layered view of the highly topical question of coexistence in our present time.
“Reflections are fleeting moments. I do not digitally edit my photographs.
I leave these moments as they are. Reality is highly fascinating.” F.S.
Franziska Stünkel (*1973) is an internationally awarded photo artist, film director and screenwriter. She studied fine arts at the University of Fine Arts Kassel, Germany. Her films have been shown in 19 countries at over 170 film festivals and have won multiple awards. Her current feature film as a director and screenwriter is based on the life of Dr. Werner Teske, who was executed in the former GDR in 1981. Nahschuss (The last Execution), starring Lars Eidinger, Devid Striesow and Luise Heyer was released internationally in cinemas in 2021/2022 and has been featured and honored in competition sections of renowned international film festivals. The movie had its world premiere at the 57th Chicago International Film Festival and can currently be watched on several platforms, including HBO Max.
